Can you tell how far away it is? I'll have to report it back to the base.

Hmm. I can't tell measure how far away it is. Aha! I can solve for it using trigonometry!
Ok. I know that I'm standing on a 20 meter watch tower. I'm looking down on that ship from an around 30 degree angle. That means My line of sight makes a 60 degree angle with the watch tower.
With those values, I can say that tan60 = x/20 where x is how far away the enemy ship is. That means x = 20(tan60). I've got it! The ship is around 35 meters away!
Sir! The enemy is 35 meters away from base. Sound the alarm we have to prepare for contact!
Good work son! You may have just saved us all.
Thanks to you we were able to stop the enemy attack.
