  • Who won the election? What was the conservancy?
  • Rutherford Hayes was born and raised in Ohio, and never really completely left. Before becoming president, he had previous political experience including being nominated for governor oh Ohio. His view points included wanting civil rights for emancipated slaves.
  • What was the compromise of 1877?
  • Samuel Tilden was originally from New Lebanon, New York, and stayed there. Tilden gained political fame from his reputation, as well as fighting for political corruption in New York City. Samuel Tilden's viewpoints were mixed, as he disapproved of the civil war and ending reconstruction in the southern states.
  • Rutherford Hayes won the presidential election of 1876. The issue with this was that there was a lot of controversy due the to the fact that Tilden was only one vote away from winning. With Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Oregon's votes not counting, people argued that Tilden would have won.
  • The compromise of 1877 was a compromise made in the United States, mainly favoring the south to settle the election dispute. One of the compromises made include the government giving more aid to the region and withdraw remaining troops. Hayes made his message clear: that would no longer attempt to help South African Americans, reconstruction was officially over.
