It was the happiest relationship she was. she went fishing, hunting, and talked frequently with neighbors. And they even worked together instead of her being shutting up.

A hurricane comes to the Everglades and Tea Cake and Janie run away to Palm Beach. During the journey, Janie falls in the river and Tea Cake gets bit by a dog when trying to save her. He gets infected with rabies.

Janie is forced to kill Tea Cake to protect herself from Tea Cake because of the rabies and his aggressive behavior. After his death, Janie returns to Eatonville. Later on, she returns to Eatonville since she feels she has nothing left in the Everglades.

She was put on trial for murder but not found guilty. She had a funeral and then returned to Eatonville. Everyone was shocked to see her return without Tea Cake and in overalls, but she was happy to be back because it reminded her of when she first met Tea Cake.
