Hey, Tigris, remember that time we saw a guy eat somebody's leg?
Yeah! It was yummy!
A poor, starving teenager named Coriolanus Snow lives in a broken, dystopian, and post-war nation. He spends his days faking that he has wealth, when in reality, he has no hope for a successful future, except for the small chance of winning the Hunger Games as a mentor. If Coriolanus were to win the Hunger Games, he would be set up for life.

Call to Adventure
What a lovely day to be locked in a zoo! Want to see some magic tricks?
Coriolanus' call to adventure arrives when his tribute, Lucy Gray, is introduced. Lucy Gray is chosen as the tribute from District 12. She is taken to the Capitol. Coriolanus courageously accepts his call to adventure when he joins Lucy Gray in being transported from a hostile carriage, to getting dumped into a zoo. He is determined to make Lucy Gray win the Hunger Games, despite the odds, both to spare her life and to acquire his successful future.

Meeting a Mentor
All people are naturally evil... like me... heheh...
SNAKEEE!!! AGHHHHH!!!!!
Coriolanus meets his mentor, Dr. Gaul, the head game-maker. One of Dr. Gaul's snakes bites Coriolanus' friend who lied about doing her homework. Dr. Gaul appreciates Coriolanus' intelligence and tries to sway him from his belief that people don't naturally resort to killing each other. Her words and actions leave a profound impact on Coriolanus throughout the story and determine many of his major actions that he commits later on.

Crossing the Threshold
Don't mess with me! I hit you with a stick!!!
AGHHHHH!!!!
After falling in love with Lucy Gray and raising support for her, Coriolanus crosses the threshold of adventure and reaches the point of no turning back at the moment when Lucy Gray enters the Hunger Games arena. Coriolanus crosses a secondary threshold when he himself enters the arena to save his conscientious friend, Sejanus, and kills a boy tribute in the process in order to defend himself. Coriolanus' guilt leaves him with nowhere to go but further past the threshold.

Tests
DIEEE!
AGHHH!!!
Although Coriolanus escapes the arena, he is left with the haunting question of whether Dr. Gaul was right, and humans do naturally revert to killing each other, like he did. Coriolanus then goes through the additional tests of watching several of his friends pass away, seeing many tributes die in horrible ways, and witnessing Lucy Gray as she is nearly killed several times. He fights and cheats twice in order to keep her alive.

Allies and Enemies
You can't take my charm, can't take my farm, can't take my... uh... arm...
While Coriolanus fights for Lucy Gray to win the Hunger Games, he makes allies and enemies. Coriolanus' allies are his supportive family along with many of his fellow students who are mentors and have lost all hope for their own tributes. On the other hand, Coriolanus' enemies become the tributes trying to kill Lucy Gray, and Dr. Gaul, who uses many snakes to try and murder all of the tributes.

Approach
Hey, roommate! Don't you think this place is so much better than the capital? Morality matters!
Morality matters! Be chiller, not a killer! Less murder, more nurture!!
Okay then...
Oh boy...
Lucy Gray eventually wins the Hunger Games as the sole surviving victor. But Coriolanus' cheating is found out and he is sent to District 12 to be a Peacekeeper as punishment. His promising future is ruined. Sejanus joins him.

Growth

Whilst being a Peacekeeper, Coriolanus is reunited with Lucy Gray. Coriolanus grows in skill through learning how to shoot a gun well and going through rigorous training. He also grows in character through bonding with Lucy Gray, developing a stronger love for her, going to Lucy Gray's musical performances, swimming, and hiking in the forest.

Death and Rebirth
Mommy!
Mommy!
Mommy!
Mommy!!!
Mommy!
I hate birds.
Sejanus tells Coriolanus a plan he has made to give guns to citizens and let them escape District 12. Coriolanus records Sejanus' confession. The moment Coriolanus hits 'record' is the moment his old self dies. Sejanus' plan with the guns backfires and causes Coriolanus to kill a man. Coriolanus' recording is listened to by Dr. Gaul, and she has Sejanus executed. In the moment that Sejanus dies, Coriolanus' new self is reborn.

Reward
I'mfreeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Dr. Gaul thinks that Coriolanus has proved himself worthy of returning home because he betrayed Sejanus. The only thing holding Coriolanus back from his future is his fear that the gun he shot a man with would be discovered, his fingerprints would be found on it, and his future would be ruined for good. However, Coriolanus locates the gun, buries it in a pond, and is left with his future wide open and full of opportunity once again.

Road Back
DIE LUCY GRAYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Lucy Gray and Coriolanus want to run away together, but when Coriolanus finds and buries the gun, he realizes that he can go home instead. Lucy Gray discovers that Coriolanus killed Sejanus. She tries to kill Coriolanus with a snake because she knows how dangerous Coriolanus is. Coriolanus chases after Lucy Gray and tries to shoot her. Her fate is a mystery. Now Coriolanus' path has absolutely nothing in its way.

Atonement and Return
Heh heh... I'm evil.
Coriolanus comes to realize that Dr. Gaul was right, and that humans do naturally resort to killing each other, like he has several times now. Coriolanus returns home and commits possibly his fourth murder when he kills Casca Highbottom, the creator of the Hunger Games. Coriolanus then goes on to live with his family and Sejanus' parents, who are unaware of Coriolanus' betrayal, and who decide to fund Coriolanus' further schooling. Coriolanus has now fully transformed into his evil self.
