- In "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is suspicion can cause people to turn on each other. One example that supports this theme is when Les Goodman's car randomly starts by itself. (Page 75-76) "How come his car just started all by itself? (Page 76) Woman One suspects. This evidence helps support the theme because the residents find Les Goodmans actions odd and suspects him of being the alien. Another piece of evidence that helps support the theme is when Steve's wife told the residents about how Steve had spent hours in the basement working on some sort of radio set. Charlie had asked suspiciously "What kind of "radio set" you working on? Who talks to you on that radio set?" This evidence helps support the theme because after Steve's wife told the residents about his radio set Charlie had suspected Steve for talking to aliens on the radio. Lastly, is when Charlie is quick to shoot the dark figure that was walking toward them. In anger woman one says, " You killed him, Charlie!" "Why were you so quick to kill, Charlie, well maybe you had to kill. Maybe Peter was trying to tell us something. Maybe he found out." Goodman accuses. In conclusion, the best theme in "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is suspicion can cause people to turn on each other.
