- Yeh-Shen lived in a small home in ancient China with her stepmother and stepsister. Yeh-Shen was effortlessly beautiful, and because of this her stepmother grew jealous as her own daughter wasn't as beautiful as Yeh-Shen. So, Yeh-Shen received constant mean treatment from her stepmother.
- Yeh-Shen's only true friend was her pet fish. Later on, the stepmother came to kill the fish, leaving only its bones. One day a sage came and warned Yeh-Shen not to lose a golden slipper. and that her fish had a magical spirit that will aid her.
- There was a festival served for bachelors to find wives, and Yeh-Shen was not allowed to go, although her stepsister was allowed. Yeh-Shen begged and begged to no avail. So, Yeh-Shen decided to find another way.
- Yeh-Shen talked to the spirit in the bones of the fish, and Yeh-Shen asked to go to the festival. The spirit rewarded her with a beautiful dress, and wonderful golden slippers.
- Yeh-Shen went to the festival, as men were bedazzled by her beauty. Yeh-Shen was spotted by her stepsister, and Yeh-Shen ran for cover. Among the running, she lost her golden slipper. Upon losing it, her entire outfit disappeared.
