  • Like in most societies in the world, new colonies in the new world quickly developed a caste system. At the top of this system were the Peninsulares, and at the bottom were the slaves and natives. Much of this system was based on how much spanish blood a person had
  • Mestizos
  • These people were born in spain, and held positions in the government. They were the highest in the caste system
  • Mulattos
  • Someone born in the americas but to 2 peninsulare parents. They could not hold positions in the government but could be army officers
  • Slaves and Natives
  • Someone with a native parent and a spanish parent.
  • Someone with an african parent and a spanish parent
  • The lowest in the caste system, these people have no connection to spanish lineage.
