Storyboard Text

  • Why does the ambulance always sound different when it goes towards or away from us Katie?
  • But why does the Doppler effect happen? can you explain it to me?
  • Its Because of the Doppler effect. It causes the pitch of object moving away to be lower and moving closer to be higher.
  • When the Ambulance is moving closer to us the sound waves hitting us appear to be more squished because the last one was made further away
  • When we zoom in It looks like sound waves that a just close together and that is what your ears hear. This cause the frequency or pitch to be higher.
  • The same happens in the opposite direction. The ambulance's waves seem more spread out to your ears making it sound lower pitch
  • Thats cool. but what whould happen if you were in the ambulance
  • Since the ambulance us compressing waves if you were moving your hearing would also sound Doppler shifted in the opposite direction this causes the effects to cancel out and the ambulance sounds normal. but everything else not moving sounds Doppler shifted.
  • Thanks for telling me that. I always wondered why that happened.
