  • This is our land now queen
  • Equal trade for all nations with China!
  • Annexation of HawaiiHawaii had a ruler, a king who passed away, then a queen began to rule Hawaii. American businessmen began to enter Hawaii. Eventually we wanted to annex Hawaii. The president, Grover Cleveland did not want to annex Hawaii. Following Cleveland was Mckinley who wanted to annex Hawaii. We sent troops to Hawaii and took it over with force, removing the queen from her throne and making Hawaii a state of the US.

  • Open Door PolicyChina at the time was not that powerful. It was divided into many different areas that were controlled and used for trade. Many nations took this land but the US was not included. The US created a new policy called the Open Door Policy which now made it so that the US can be included in trade and all nations get equal trade.
  • Remember the MaineThere was a naval ship which was around Cuba at the time. The ship blew up and people had two different ideas as to what it could be. The first idea that is could have been was just an accident or the other one being that it was an attack by Spain.

  • Deal for the canal?
  • Spanish American WarThe war was lead by destruction of the Maine. War was declared with Spain in 1838. The war took 6 months, the US won and we now became a world power because we proved we are a strong nation.
  • Yellow JournalismYellow Journalism was another thing that led to the Spanish American War. After the Maine was destroyed there were newspapers created that showed citizens how Spain destroyed the Maine. The form of journalism is a method that pushes a nation to war against another nation which is what exactly happened to the US
  • Spain attacks our naval ships in Cuba
  • Panama CanalThe US wanted the Panama Canal for a few reasons. The US wanted it to shorten the trip to the other side of the continent. The US also wanted the canal to reduce trade cost. The US tried to negotiate with Columbia for the canal and they denied the request, eventually the US negotiated with Panama for the canal to be built and we built it. The construction took eight years.
