  • Web must stop nationalism at once!
  • Once upon a time, Metternich (The prince of Austria) was sitting in power on the throne of Austria. The uprising of nationalism (especially in Germany) made him weary of job security. He knew that many wanted equal representation and reforms. He began censoring media and started becoming a dictatorship. Metternich was power hungry and land hungry, which would be his downfall
  • The Metternich system was put in place to ensure absolute monarchies remain solid. He wanted to prevent uprising rebellions and nationalistic views. He implemented a series of meetings with other power countries to resolve situations. He also used a secret police force to help stop revolutions. This system of absolute control wouldn't stick as Germans as well as other countries became anxious with these new rules.
  • MONARCHIES RULE... LITERALLY
  • As a result of the uprising of upset and nationalistic views among European citizens, the Congress of Vienna took place. This congress was in session to settle major issues among the countries, and provide long term solutions. This congress contributed to further uniting Germany, as the amount of states within the country went from 300+ states to a mere 39. Conservatives redrew borders in the old fashioned ways. Above all, the congress implemented a system of checks and balances to neutralize further state aggression.

  • How can we stop uprising while keeping folks happy?
  • Balance of power!!!!!
  • While the Congress of Vienna was successful in some ways, Metternich still wanted control over the German states. Meanwhile, a man, a game-plan, and a very... very ugly mustache named Otto Von Bismarck of Prussia delivered the infamous Blood and Iron speech. His goal was to persuade people that Germany's unity would be achieved by the might of an iron-clad military and the blood shed in battle. Talks for peace and land settlements on Germany with Napoleon III were a mere distraction, Bismarck would go on to betray Napoleon III, and begin a series of 3 wars that would bat away Austrian control and French influence.
  • This is a war that may only be handled with Blood and Iron!
  • The struggle, which lasted from July 19, 1870, to January 28, 1871, was sparked by France's desire to reclaim its leading position in continental Europe. The French believed that their army was superior to the German armies. For his part, Bismarck regarded the war with France as an opportunity and would lead to unite the South German nations with the Prussian-led North German Confederation and establish a powerful German Empire. Finally, Due to Napoleon's abdication, the Papal States were integrated into the Kingdom of Italy, resulting in German unification.
  • I thought we were pals :(
  • Ratio + Bozo
  • At last, Germany was one! Prussia had defeated France, Austria, and Denamark. On December 16, 1870, a delegation from the North German Parliament arrived at Versailles to ask the Prussian king to accept the title of Emperor of Germany. The Confederation was dissolved on the 20th and the Imperial Proclamation was announced on January 18, 1871 in the Hall of Mirrors. King William I was crowned in France at Versailles... Ouch to France.
