  • Good morning, this is BBC News reporting from New York. Behind me here is an urban farm located on the rooftop of a building in the bustling city of New York.
  • As many of you viewers know, climate change has induced crop reductions, affecting optimal growing environments through rising temperatures and changes in rainfall
  • More than 11% of the world’s land is used for crop production which creates environmental challenges such as habitat clearing (deforestation) and soil degradation
  • However, not all of you may know that agriculture contributes to 30% of anthropocentric greenhouse gas (GHG)!
  • Agriculture is crucial to our daily lives as it produces all the foods we eat. However, it is causing severe damage to our environment which is why we need to find a more sustainable alternative to traditional farming soon
  • And this is where urban farming comes into play!
  • Urban agriculture is defined as the growing, processing, and distribution of food and other products through plant cultivation and seldom raising livestock in and around cities for feeding local population
  • Forms of urban agriculture include community gardens, rooftop farms, vertical farming, and backyard gardensUrban farming has grown in popularity in recent years to deal with vacant property, revitalizing neighborhoods, and provide job skillsAccording to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) 800 million people practice urban agriculture worldwide.
  • Today I will be going in depth about the issues our world is facing today in terms of agriculture and how urban farming can help revitalize these issues.
  • As I've mentioned before, conventional farming causes increased greenhouse gas which is one of the leading causes to global warming. However, many organizations and governments have already started taking action towards a solution with a smaller carbon footprint.
