  • Before starting work at a new ranch, George and Lennie will spend the night by a pool. George is angry with Lennie because they had to leave their previous job so quickly. Lennie has a penchant for getting himself into trouble. Lennie persuades George to tell him about their imaginary farm. It appears to be a tranquil environment.Lennie is found stroking a dead mouse in his pocket, which George discovers. He complains that caring for Lennie limits his ability to live a more free life. We learn that Lennie's innocent petting of a girl's dress cost them their last jobs in Weed.

  • Later that night, George explains to Slim why he and Lennie travel together, as well as what happened in Weed. The men talk about Candy's old dog, who is tired and sick. Carlson shoots it as a goodwill gesture.
