  • The Turtles’ Normal Habitat: The Beach Shores
  • Today is such a beautiful day to lay eggs on this sunny day!
  • Yes!! I love our beach!
  • A Big Storm Causes an Enormous Flood
  • Stay calm everyone!
  • Oh my! It is raining so much! What do we do now?
  • Now, the Turtles must find a way to Survive
  • Yes, let's keep going because if we stay here, it will be the end for us!
  • Guys, keep climbing! I see a little island over there!
  • These leatherback sea turtles used to live by the shores of this beautiful beach in Mexico. They all had very similar characteristics and there was not a lot of variation among them: they were adapted to hotter and sunny climates and because of their lack of hard shells, they did not deal very well with heavy rains or rocky surfaces.
  • The Turtles find a New Habitat
  • This place is not so bad although it is very different.
  • What do you mean? The grass here is so musty!
  • However, one day, a big storm with heavy rain would unexpectedly importune the turtles and soon change their environment drastically from the way the turtles were used to.
  • The Turtles begin to Adapt and Reproduce
  • I agree!
  • As the rain ended up flooding the beach shores completely, in order for the turtles not to be killed by either the predators of the vast ocean or the different environment conditions, they had to climb the ocean rocks and look for a new habitat.
  • The Fittest Survive and Reproduce More (THE END)
  • I told you guys we would dominate the naked turtles!
  • Hahahaha of course. We were always stronger anyways...
  • The turtles were able to, hopefully, find a new habitat above the rocks (a little island that was not flooded by the storm). They had to, however, begin to adapt to the new environment conditions, including different soils, temperature, and other species’ presence.
  • My paws hurt so bad!!
  • There are so many bugs here!!
  • Where is our beautiful sun?
  • After many generations of leatherback sea turtles reproducing and passing along their favorable traits, this species began to adapt to this environment even more.
  • Why do you guys look so different? I miss our real family...
  • They are just jealous we are living more comfortably than them!
  • Stop being so dramatic!
  • So, with the survival and reproduction of the fittest, the entire population of this species of turtle was able to adapt to their environment with the proper phenotypes, including hard shells and stronger paws. These new characteristics and different genotypes now allowed them to walk more easily on the harder soil, protect them from the predators, and become better competitors of food.
