  • "...she suddenly fell asleep in the woods. The runaways, ragged, dirty, hungry, cold, did not steal the gun as they might have, and set off by themselves, or turn back."
  • We got to go free or die. And freedom's not bought with dust.

  • They trust her enough not to leave or wake her, and they know she's human, and vulnerable. They depend and trust her enough not to do so. This means Harriet Tubman is trustworthy.
  • She was explaining to the runaways that they could not be found. She is determined to make it to Canada, because she knows they can't be caught. This means Harriet Tubman is determined.
  • She told them of others who'd escaped, and the others listen as she tells them stories and sings hymns out of her hymn book. It shows she's motherly and not rough.
