  • Welcome to northern Alaska, the home of the wood frog. This species is a marvel! As you can see, winter has just begun and the temperatures have fallen, close to 3 degrees F.This is the stimulus that prompts the wood frog to prepare for a long winter's sleep and all that entails for the wood frog to survive... let's follow him...
  • 3 degrees F
  • The drop in temperature is the stimulus that causes a few responses; the frog finds refuge in a cave, the frog begins to store its urine/releases glucose to create a natural antifreeze.
  • Cells are the basic unit of life. Red blood cells normally carry oxygen around the frog. But the cold weather threatens to freeze the water in the blood and damage these eukaryotic cells. Thankfully the homemade antifreeze is able to protect the cells as the wood frog remains in a state of suspended animation for about 8 months of winter. Let's see what happens next...
  • Another stimulus is at play now- the warming weather! As the snow melts, the wood frog responds by thawing. Cells return to normal and body processes start again. These become stimuli to which the frog responds by going to "find food, a mate, and take a much needed pee". Thanks for taking this wood frog journey with me regarding Stimulus/Response and Cells.
