  • The morning of September 1066. Harald Hardrada, promised the throne by Edward the Confessor, marches on from Norway to England, planning to invade the country. Discontent, he is on the belief that Godwinson usurped the throne . He thus makes his way to invade England from the North, armed with an army of 10,000 strong with 300 ships.
  • War and loss
  • Expecting an attack from William of Normandy from France (whom also believed that he was the rightful king), Harold Godwinson stay put in the South and was surprised when he heard about Hardrada’s invasion from the North. In what was an intelligent move, he collected the Housecarls and the Fyrds units from each of their separate counties. Rumored to have 7000-15000 army personnel, the English Army was about to send an earthquake to their Norwegian counterpart.
  • An untimely death
  • On the morning of 24th September, Harold Godwinson’s army were tired. They had walked 180 miles in 3 days. They stopped for a brief rest at Tadcaster. Then, they moved on. Harold Hardrada underestimated this exact same power and willingness to go on and thus he blundered on a large scale. This would cost him the battle. The army, not knowing the speed of their opponent’s, dropped their shields and remained scattered in different tents. This could make them more vulnerable .
  • Celebrations are cut short
  • The advent of the next day, September 25th the Battle of Stamford officially took place. Hardrada’s men took a traditional shield formation, a tactic going back to the Roman Empire, and the English, tired, struggled to get in! There is a legend which goes that a lone axeman cut down 40 Englishmen and pushed back their army. However, that was cut short as the English army broke the boundaries and attacked.
  • While all this conundrum happening and the war full-fledgedly taking place, no one noticed a lone English archer took a shot on Hardrada and ended up killing him, with the arrow right on the throat. With this being done, the Viking soldiers slowly took note and, when they realized there leader was not there, retreated. After, the Saxon Godwinson signed a pact with Hardrada’s men to let his son go, as long as Norway never attacked England.
  • The Battle of Stamford Bridge ended in England’s witty and decisive victory. However, the battle to the throne was not won. William of Normandy, had also been promised the sovereignty of England. The battlefield spirit lingers on as Godwinson and his men make their way south, bruised and battered after a tiring battle.
  • After the battle, the Norwegians plead to never invade again as long as Harald’s son would go and be freed.
