  • Chapter 8 Summary
  •       In Chapter 8 of To Kill a Mockingbird ,many significant events took place  Winter arrived and Mrs. Radley died.  For the first time in a long time it snowed in Maycomb and Scout and Jem were able to make a snowman. The temperature dropped dramatically which made it difficult to put out the fire that ravaged Miss Maudie's house.  While standing a safe distance from the fire, it seems that Boo Radley covered Scout with a blanket.  Scout and Jem experienced many emotional highs and lows during this chapter.
  • "I didn't know how you were going to do it," he said to Jem, "but from now on I'll never worry about what'll become of you, son, you'll always have an idea." (Lee 76).  After seeing the snowman Atticus is realizing that his kids are maturing - growing up and becoming independent thinkers. This is related to the theme of innocence or loss of innocence.
  • Thematic Quotes
  • "Mr. Avery's face appeared in an upstairs window.  He pushed a mattress out the window into the street and threw down furniture until men shouted" (Lee 79). Scout and Jem had just completed a mocking snowman of Mr. Avery and yet here he is in a harrowing situation rising to the occasion and bravely attempting to preserve some of Miss Maudie's belongings. This is related to the theme that people will rise to the occasion and have courage or be brave when called upon to do so. People can sometimes surprise you!
