- Yen Jun-ling, or Adeline came home, with a certificate along with a silver medal. She had led her class and was awarded by her teacher that medal in front of her entire class. Though her siblings were jealous, her aunt Baba was proud of her. Aunt Baba kept her certificate in a safe area.
- When her first day of school at "Shang Xin" had ended, nobody was there to pick her up. She wandered out into the streets, and was helped by a kind stranger.

- Adeline and her siblings were infuriated by the unfair treatment they had been getting from their father and stepmother. They plotted their actions as their stepmother, Niang, watched.

- Adeline had won the election for Sheng xin's head girl, and her peers had come over to congratulate her. Niang got angry, thinking Adeline had invited her friends to show off.
- Adeline was sent to a boarding school in Tianjin, where she met her old teachers. She studied with children younger than her because she didn't know much english. Everyone was leaving Tianjin because of the troops moving in, and soon, Adeline was the only student left.
- Fortunately, she was saved by her aunt, Niang's sister. She had a reunion with her family, and was taught more about her culture by Yeye, her grandfather. Adeline entered a playwriting competition, and won. She was congratulated by her father, but even as he told her to be a doctor instead of a writer, she said, "Father, I shall go to medical school in England and become a doctor. Thank you very, very much."
