  • Robert Walton is going on his voyage to the North Pole.
  • I'm going on a voyage!
  • Walton is very lonely while at sea, he writes to his sister about his longing for a friend.
  • "But I have one want which I have never yet been able to satisfy; and the absence of the object of which I now feel as a most severe evil. I have no friend." (Shelley 4)
  • "a strange sight suddenly attracted our attention and diverted our solicitude from our own situation. We perceived a low carriage, fixed on a sledge and drawn by dogs, pass on towards the north, at the distance of half a mile; a being which had the shape of a man, but apparently of gigantic stature, sat in the sledge and guided the dogs." (Shelley 32)
  • while at sea Walton notices something in the distance.
  • they bring the man onto the boat where he tells Walton the story of his creation. Walton is so taken by Victor and his story that he documents it. Walton has finally found a man that he can call friend.
  • Victor starts to tell Walton about his scientific discoveries and how he has created a creature. Walton is captivated by every detail.
  • "After days and nights of incredible labour and fatigue, I succeeded in discovering the cause of generation and life; nay, more, I became capable of bestowing animation on lifeless matter." (Shelley 50)
  • Walton listens in shock as Victor tells him how he reanimated a human like monster and how he was in such despair from his own work.
