On September 13, 1848, he and his crew were setting down a railroad line. Gage was inserting explosive powder in a hole with an iron rod but the powder caused a spark which shot the iron rod towards Gage. It entered through his cheek and shot through his skull, injuring most of the frontal lobe of his brain.
The injury towards his frontal lobe was a detrimental effect on his behavior. His friends recognized that he was no longer the Gage they knew. He behaved inappropriately; he made rude comments without hesitation and became violent.
Gage’s story is a case study because his study is a detailed examination of the brain an individual over time.
Phineas Gage was the first case in Psychology that proved that even a minor injury to the brain can result in a personality change. His case encouraged Psychology to study how different parts of the brain can specialize in different functions.
