- After Toussaint's death, his former commander Dessalines, had himself crowned Emperor of Haiti with the title of Jacques I. He was assassinated in 1806.

- After Dessalines was assassinated, he was succeeded by Christophe, King Henry I. Christophe created a nobility of princes, dukes, counts and barons. He spent lavish amounts of money and labour on building places, the grandest of which was his prize chateau of Sans Souci.
- To defend Haiti from any future invasions by Napoleon or any other forces, Henry Christophe built a gigantic citadel in the hills as a place of refuge. Thousands of Haitians were put to work and died on the construction of this fortress called 'La Ferrière'- 'the fist'. He had it stocked with food, medicines and arms, enough to enable 15,000 men to withstand a year's siege behind its thick walls.
- Henry Christophe, King of Haiti died in 1806. He was paralyzed by a stroke and took his own life in despair at his failure to bring peace to his country.
