  • George Washington served 2 terms from 1789 to 1797. George Washington, did not represent a political party. George Washington's main opponent was John Adams. He appointed John Jay as the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, signed a bill establishing the first national bank, the Bank of the United States, and established his own presidential cabinet.

  • John Adams served 2 terms from 1797-1801. Adams main opponent was Thomas Jefferson. Since Jefferson came 2nd in the election he became Adams vice president. He was in the Federalist Party. Adams had sent diplomats to France to negotiate peace, but France would not agree to stop attacking American ships. Adams also passed the Alien and Sedition Acts. Federalists wanted power in Congress so immigrants had to live in the u.s. for 14 years before they could vote. Executive branch was given power to deport immigrants who are dangerous to the US or who had ties with a country that was fighting with the US.It was illegal to publicly disagree with the government if they did not they could be fined or imprisoned. Lastly Adams greatest contribution came in the form of his ability to rally Americans around the cause of independence.

  • Thomas Jefferson served 2 terms in office from 1801 to 1809. He was in the Democratic-Republican party. Jefferson had 2 vice presidents Aaron Burr and George Clinton. Jefferson's political opponents were Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, John Adams, Aaron Burr and Patrick Henry. During his presidency he reduced taxes, government spending, and the national debt, and repealed the Alien and Sedition Acts.

  • James Monroe served for 2 terms from 1817 to 1825. He was in the Democratic-Republican party. Monroe's vice president was Daniel. D Tompkins. His main opponent during his election was Rufus King. Monroe's greatest achievement as a diplomat was his negotiation of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In foreign affairs, his administration achieved a series of victories, notably the purchase of Florida, the settlement of border disputes with Britain, and the formulation of the Monroe Doctrine.
  • John Quincy Adams served one term from 1825 to 1829. He was in the Whig Party. Adams vice president was John C. Calhoun. His main opponent during his election was Andrew Jackson. One good accomplishment was the formulating with the President the Monroe Doctrine. The biggest failure of the Adams presidency was his inability to work with Congress and captivate the public. Adams also didn't get much done during his presidency .
