  • Okay class, here is your assignment to work on! You have to find out all about the Australian Constitution: how it was made, who made it, etc. It is due next Monday. Enjoy! I hope you learn some interesting facts and teach me some too! Bye everyone!
  • All good! Bye!
  • Alright! Bye!
  • Okay Ms Diamond! See you next Monday!
  • Let's go into the garden and talk about it.
  • Hey there Rosy, welcome home! What are you thinking about?
  • Oh, I was just wondering about something related to my assignment: The Australian Constitution.
  • A long time back, Australia was six different British colonies, but, in 1889, the leaders of the colonies decided to have a meeting and decide on if they should be a nation.
  • A voting system, called a 'referendum', was held to decide if Australia should be one big country. A referendum is a vote, but only to change something in the constitution, and the majority have to agree. The majority in the referendum, which was 90.77% of the people, voted 'yes', and on the 1st of January 1901, a thing called the Constitution was created, meaning that Australia was officially a nation.
  • Wow! Then what happened?
  • If that happens, then action is taken against them. Anyways, the constitution had 2 lines that discriminated against Aboriginal people, even though they have been living in Australia for between 50,000 and 120,000 years. These lines said that the British government will not consider Aboriginals as living humans, and that they won't get the rights that white Europeans have.
  • The Constitution is a very important legal document, which has all the laws written on it. These laws are to be followed by both: the government and the residents living in Australia. The constitution has been amended, or changed, eight times.
  • Oh wow, but what happens if someone doesn't follow the constitution?
  • So, in 1967, another referendum was held. This one was about changing those 2 lines about Aboriginal discrimination. The majority of the people voted yes to changing these lines, and after that, Aboriginals had the same rights and treatment that the Europeans did.
  • Your welcome Rosy! I'm sure you will.
  • That's amazing!! Thank you sooo much mom! I am definitely getting an A on this!
  • Okay, time to see your assignments. I am so excited to see what you all found out! I hope you did them. Oh yes you did, they are on my desk!
  • Time for results! Rosy got an A, Callie got an A and Cathy got an A as well!
  • Yayyy!
  • The next Monday....
