- Before Hermando committed crimes.
- This neighborhood is messed up. Life is like a jungle out here. My sister was raped here, my brother was shot and killed here, and the establishment did nothing about it. I guess human lifedoesn't count for too much and its okay to take what you want. I feel like the law is kill or be killed. So, I've got to protect myself from now on.

- What's the big deal? Why is everyone so upset with me? I mean, things like this happen all the time in South side Chicago.
- Hermando was found guilty and sentenced to death by lethal injection. People gathered at his tombstone pondering why he behaved and acted the way he did.
- From a sociological perspective, I think he did so because of the kind of influence his social milieu or environment had on him.
- I think Hermando lacked sociological imagination. He couldn't see beyond his immediate social milieu, to understand that there are different rules for different people in places like Chicago.
