- Thomas Gallaudet meets Dr. Cogswell after discussing the condition of his deaf daughter, Alice. Gallaudet meets the young girl and realizes the need for a form of communication for the deaf.

- Gallaudet begins his mission to learn sign language in order to teach the deaf in America. He heads to the Braidwood school in England after receiving various donations from many others to fund his project and learn the British Sign Language methods.
- Reluctant Loan
- Very well...BUT ONLY 3 years, then he must come home..
- Braidwood refuses to teach Gallaudet the secrets of their teaching methods, wanting to keep it to themselves. Instead, they send him to Paris, France, and he hopes his chances are better.
- Towards the First American Deaf School
- After arriving in Paris, Gallaudet meets Sicard and his deaf proteges, Laurent Clerc and Jean Massieu. He converses with the men and is taken in very well, soon to find that they are interested in aiding his cause.
- The four men discuss Gallaiudet's plans to bring European sign language to America, and he asks for Clerc's aid after witnessing his expert signing along with Massieu. Sicard is hesitant and persistent in keeping Clerc under his careful eyes, however, he finally releases him on a "3-year loan contract) to America.

- Clerc and Gallaudet sail back to America. During their voyage, Gallaudet aids Clerc in perfecting his English, whilst the Frenchmen likewise aids him in learning sign language. They return home, and Clerc meets his newfound fellow deaf companion, Alice, whom Dr. Cogswell, Gallaudet, and himself aid. Upon witnessing Clerc's skill, money is raised and put forth towards the first American school for the Deaf...
