  • Thank you.
  • The Civil War came to an end in April 1865 when Lee's army couldn't flee anymore. Lee tried as hard as he could to get his army passed the Union blockade, but soon sent a letter to Grant and asked for the terms of surrender. On Sunday, April 9, Lee and Grant met at Appomattox Court House to discuss the surrender.
  • The Surrender of the Confederacy
  • The men greeted each other and then exchanged light talk. Lee finally brought up the real reason for the meeting. Lee asked Grant to write the terms of surrender. The terms of surrender stated that the Confederate army would give its weapons and public property to the Union army.
  • The Surrender of the Confederacy
  • Yay!
  • I am so happy!
  • Lee already showed much emotion while signing the terms. That was nothing compared to when he was done signing. Witnesses say that Lee showed pain and sorrow and that Grant was being very respectful.
  • The Surrender of the Confederacy
  • We can best show our joy by refusing to celebrate their defeat.
  • The meeting had many emotions. Lee showed pain and sorrow. Lee left the house looking defeated and didn't notice the Union officers who stood as a sign of their respect. Grant also lifted his hat as his final solute to Lee.
  • While Lee and his army were experiencing pain and sorrow the Union was celebrating. The Union celebrated by shooting their guns. Artillerymen fired their guns as a celebration that the war was over and that they won.
  • Grant heard the Union soldiers celebrating. He immediately sent orders to stop it. He said "We can best show our joy by refusing to celebrate their defeat."
