  • Thank you, Dr. Whit!
  • Your surgery on your shoulder was a success! Hopefully, the scar should heal nicely!
  • 5 months later...
  • There is this large mass on my shoulder! It has been growing and darkening gradually from the scar from my shoulder! I should see a doctor about this!
  • What is a keloid?
  • Fortunately, after examining the mass on your shoulder and a skin biopsy, we found that it is not cancerous (American Academy of Dermatology Association). It is just a keloid!
  • According to the American of Dermatology Association, a keloid is a type of raised scar that grows larger than the original wound.
  • You showed some common symptoms for a keloid on the shoulder. For example, your keloid appeared gradually, taking 5 months, and darkened over time. Most other keloids also appear around the same time, taking 3-12 months to appear, and also darken in color over time (American Academy of Dermatology Association).
  • Additionally, your shoulder keloid is in the shape of a liquid that spilled on the skin and hardened and feels hard and rubbery, just like other keloids. However, keloids can appear on the chest, legs, arms, and ears, and can also feel soft and doughy. However, ear keloids are round solid masses that hang from the ears. You also explained that your keloid felt itchy which is also a common symptom. When I tried moving the mass, it stayed fixed in place, which is also a common symptom (American Academy of Dermatology Association).
  • I’m relieved that I know what it is now, but how can my keloid be treated? Can a surgeon just take it off?
  • If we just surgically remove the keloid, the resulting scar can lead to another keloid forming (U.S. Dermatology Partners)
  • So we will instead use a drug as treatment.
