  • Cell 1
  • Mary! This is unbelievable. How did you mess this up? I asked you to place an order for letter stock 20 times! Did you even listen to me?
  • No Mary, you’re remembering it wrong! I told you to get letter stock, it’s as though you’re doing this on purpose!
  • That’s not true. I can’t believe this Steve your behaviour is so uncalled for lately.
  • Steve, you told me to order this kind of paper and I did! You are angry with me for something I didn't do.
  • Cell 2
  • Yes, Sam thank you. Steve is having a tough time in his personal life and over the last few weeks he has been getting more verbally aggressive towards me and his coworkers.
  • Thank you for reaching out Mary, I understand you have some concerns about Steve?
  • Yes, it has been escalating and although I understand that he is having personal difficulties, I believe this needs to be addressed.
  • Thank you for bringing this to my attention Mary. I will speak with Steve this afternoon.
  • I noticed that his demeanor was different recently and I have been keeping an eye on it but I was unaware that it had been affecting his workplace relationships.
  • Cell 3
  • This is an exaggeration, I haven't been rude to anyone!
  • Hi Steve, thank you for joining me. I wanted to address some concerns that another employee has raised regarding your recent behaviour in the office.
  • What do you mean? Who brought this up?
  • Steve, please just let me finish. Your recent volatile confrontations with your coworkers and the aggressive ways that you have been bringing up your concerns to other employees has been affecting others in the office.
  • Due to personal problems, Steve has been arguing with his coworkers and has been increasingly reactive in the workplace. This is notably out of character for Steve, who has been with the company for many years and has excellent relationships with his coworkers. In a conversation with his coworker Mary, his recent behaviour escalates.
  • Cell 4
  • I understand that it may be difficult to see the impact of your behaviour. But it has been affecting other employees and their level of comfort in coming to work every day. This is not important because it has been affecting the team's work, but also because some of your coworkers are upset by your harsh words.
  • Mary goes to speak with her manager, Sam, about the conversation she has with Steve and her concerns over his behaviour.
  • Cell 5
  • I guess I hadn’t realized that my behaviour was impacting my coworkers so much. I’ve just been having a really tough time in my personal life. My son has been sick, and my wife and I have been taking him to many specialist appointments these past few weeks. My wife has even had to use her vacation time so we can take him to doctors far away since I have none left. I have also been losing a lot of sleep being up with my son at night.
  • I appreciate you sharing that with me Steve and from what I am hearing it seems like your duties at work have made it difficult to be there for your son and the strain of sleep deprivation and the stress of your son’s illness has led to a change in your behaviour. Is this correct?
  • Later in the afternoon, Sam calls Steve into his office to address his recent volatile behaviour towards Mary and his other coworkers.
  • Cell 6
  • Would adjusting your hours help with the situation? Or we can also discuss you taking Family Responsibility Leave so that you can have some time with your son? I really value your long years of service with the company and your contributions over the years so I’m happy to find a way to alleviate the strain that your responsibilities have caused.
  • Steve starts to get agitated and feels defensive about being confronted. He is visibly angry.
  • At hearing that his behaviour has affecting his coworkers, Steve’s body language starts to calm down.
  • Yes that’s right. I really did not intend to raise my voice towards Mary earlier. I have just been having a really hard time.
  • I understand Steve, it seems like what you're going through is very difficult, and I can see why it has led to a change in your disposition. Let’s discuss how we can make changes to improve the situation.
  • Steve and Sam have a calm, respectful conversation where Sam empathetically provides some tangible solutions to help Steve alleviate the external stressors that are causing his outbursts at work.
  • Oh wow... I didn’t realize that I would be eligible for something like that. I would have to discuss taking leave with my wife prior to deciding but if not adjusting my hours to come in a bit later and leave later would really help so that I could be home in the mornings with my son.
  • Absolutely, we can discuss further but we can definitely change your hours in the interim. I would also like to set up a meeting with Mary so we can address the situation that happened earlier.
  • Yes that sounds good.
  • Cell 7
  • Your actions have been hard on all of us but thank you for apologizing, I completely understand that you're going through something and I'm sorry about that. We're all a team here so going forward we need to have open communication and support each other in any way that we can.
  • Mary I really just want to apologize for the way I acted. I've been struggling with some personal things and that has affected my mood in the workplace. It is not an excuse and won't happen again.
  • I would like to thank both of you for being here. I know addressing situations is not always easy but it is definitely important.
  • Cell 8
  • I'd like to thank you all for joining this meeting. I wanted to discuss the importance of open communication and collaboration. Recently, we've faced some challenges, and I'm proud of the way we've come together to address them. We must continue to foster a supportive environment where every member of our team feels valued and heard. I also want to implement mandatory monthly emotional self-evaluations as well as peer evaluations. The emotional self evaluations will allow you to discuss any possible personal problems you may be experiencing and are comfortable sharing, this way I can provide the proper support. The peer evaluations are so I can see if there is any conflict occurring that needs intervening.
  • Cell 9
  • I feel like the work dynamic has been so much better! Everyone seems a lot happier.
  • I agree, there has been no conflict as everyone seems less stressed and intervening is happening at appropriate times before conflict gets out of control!
  • Sam invites Steve and Mary into his office to help resolve the conflict between them.
  • Sam holds a meeting with the employees to discuss the importance of collaboration and effective communication.
  • Mary and another employee discuss the long-term changes they've noticed since Sam implemented the conflict-prevention initiatives.
