  • A person that I have always looked up to is my Aunt Marika. She is one of the smartest, kindest, and adventurous people I know. She was born in Boulder, Colorado and is my Mom's little sister.
  • Aunt Marika knew early in her life that she wanted to be different, and set her goals high. She loved Space and decided she wanted to be an Astronaut. She spent hours looking at the stars and planning how she would get there. I admire that she knew very early in life what she wanted to be when she grew up.
  • Aunt Marika decided to study Mechanical Engineering in college and joined ROTC to help pay for college. She graduated number one in her class from Clarkson in Upstate New York. I admire that she picked a challenging degree, left home to meet new people, and paid for school herself. This was very brave.
  • After college Aunt Marika joined the Air Force to become a pilot. Many NASA Astronauts are pilots and she loves to fly. She learned to fly C130 spy planes that stay up in the air for over a week and refuel in the air. I am amazed that she learned how to fly such a huge plane. The tires are taller than I am! I now know that I want to be part of something helps people when I am older.
  • Aunt Marika met her husband, Dan, while at Pilot School. They secretly got married so they could be stationed together (how romantic). Because Dan was assigned the C130, Marika picked the same plane so they could also fly together.
  • Both Aunt Marika and Uncle Dan love an adventure and outdoor activities. They had to learn to parachute out of a plane and live off the land to simulate being shot down over enemy lines. Aunt Marika has promised to take me Skydiving for my 18th Birthday.
  • My Aunt Marika had her first child when she was done with Pilot School and flying full time. I was impressed that she had Isaac and then went back to work so quickly. It must have been hard to manage being a new mom with both her and Uncle Dan working a lot. I admire that she was able to balance her dreams and having a family without giving anything up.
  • My aunt did not stop with just one child, and now she has four! They are all sweet, well behaved, and that is because her and Dan make a great team. I admire that they both can keep working and share the tasks of raising the family together.
  • Once Aunt Marika and Uncle Dan grew their family, they started flying the unmanned planes so that they would not be away from home so much. They sit in a flight station to control the UAV's and I imagine it is kind of like playing video games!
  • Aunt Marika is still focused on being an Astronaut one day. She got her Masters in Materials Science from the University of Nebraska while Isaac was a baby. She applied to NASA and they have her on the waiting list to be interviewed. Aunt Marika is also a Captain in the Air Force, similar to other NASA Pilots.
  • Of all the things I admire about Aunt Marika, the most important is her willingness to listen. I can talk to her about anything and she does not judge me. She just helps me figure things out so I can figure out the path I need to take.
  • I saw my Aunt Marika this past summer in Destin. We spent time at the beach and boating. She was taking a three week class on managing the Air Forces's response to an attack on the United States. She will be one of the critical people to protect our nation if a terrorist or another country attacks us.
  • In summary, I admire Aunt Marika and hope that I can live up to the example she sets for being brave, studious, selfless, and patriotic. She also has a wonderful family and we all are proud of her. I can't wait to see what else she accomplishes!
