- Hey Sasha. I was really confused in class today, he just kept talking on and on about acids and bases.

- A pH scale shows if a substance is an acid, neutral, or a base. For example, Lemon juice is an acid, with a pH of 2. Water is neutral, with a pH of 7. A really important fact to remember is that water AND salt are neutral. An egg is a base with a pH of 8.

- Exactly! But there are a couple more facts to know about acids, bases, and how they're neutralized.
- strong acid + strong base = neutral solution
- Acids are sour. They form hydrogen ions, or more commonly known as H+. They're corrosive, meaning they destroy substances who come in contact with them. They react with metal, and neutralize bases. In both cases, when you add a strong acid and a strong base, it equals a neutral substance. Just like we saw on the pH scale, all acids have a pH of less than 7.
- Bases are a bit different. They form hydroxide ions, or referred to as OH-. They're slippery and taste bitter. However, it's also corrosive and reacts with metal. They're pH is always greater than 7. Just like an acid neutralizes a base, a base neutralizes an acid. It can help to remember that acids are blue and bases are red. When an acid and base mix, they make water or salt because they're both neutral substances.
