Langston was raised by his grandmother until he was 13, then he moved to Lincoln, Illinois. After his parents separated, his father ended up settling in Mexico.

Langston Hughes went to elementary school when he was a little boy. He attended schools in Kansas and Illinois, and in elementary school, Hughes was named class poet, although he had never written a poem.
