  • At the start of the novel Captain Walton writes letters to his sister and says But I bitterly want the feeling of a friend (Shelley 7) as he feels alone on the ship. Victor Frankenstein is rescued by Captain Walton and when Victor comes abroad the boat, he proceeds to tell Walton his whole life story. Captain Walton feels like he has finally found a friend.
  • Woah get away from me what are you doing?
  • Victor meets Professor Waldman who encourages Victor to pursue his studies of Cornelius Agrippa despite Professor Krempe telling Victor that he shouldn't waste his time studying this nonsense. Victor becomes consumed with studying science, and more specifically the animation upon lifeless matter. During this time he ignores his entire family.
  • Victor is successful in creating a the terrifying monster. Victor says His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great God! (Shelley 58). He had loved the challenge of creating the monster, yet at the same time, he becomes worried about the monster and what he might do. When he returns to his lab the monster is gone.
  • Victor is on a secluded journey through the mountains and glaciers to try to cope with the guilt of creating the monster. The monster finds Victor and convinces him to listen to his story. The monster tells Victor My soul glowed with love and humanity; but am I not alone, miserable alone? You, my creator, abhor me (Shelley 114).
  • The monster viciously kills Victor's brother William and proceeds to blame the brutal killing on Justine, the Frankenstein's housekeeper. This causes Victor and his family to be overwhelmed with great pain and anguish. The monster says I too can create desolation, my enemy is not invulnerable; this death will carry despair to him, and a thousand other miseries shall torment and destroy him (Shelley 171).
  • The monster observes the interactions of a family living in a cottage. He secretly helps them with chores and provides them with food. He longs to have the relationship that this family has. He feels that his lack of relationships is unfair when he comments But where were my friends and relations? No father had watched my infant days , no mother had blessed me with smiles and caresses (Shelley 142).
  • The monster reads some of Victor's old book and comes across Victor's journal that describes the details of the monster's creation. The journal is evidence of how disgusted and horrified Victor was with his creation. The monster shares Satan had his companions, fellow devils, to admire and encourage him; but I am solitary and abhorred (Shelley 155).
  • The monster introduces himself to the blind De Lacey father, when the rest of the family is not home, hoping that he would be accepting of him after hearing his story. The monster says to the old man Do not desert me in the hour of trial (Shelley 161). The family unexpectedly returns home and Felix attacks the monster and beats him. The monster leaves without even fighting back.
  • The monsters saves a small girl from drowning in the river. This demonstrates that the monster has the human capacity to choose right from wrong. Instead of being seen as the saviour in this situation he is considered the attacker and he is shot in the shoulder. He then swears external hatred to all man kind (Shelley 169).
  • The monster asks Victor to make him a female creature like him. If Victor agreed the monster said he would never see him again.“I am alone and miserable, man will not associate with me. My companies must be of the same species and have the same defects (Shelley 173).. Victor agrees, after being moved by the monster's compelling reasons.
  • Victor is almost finished creating a female monster but stops and destroys it whenever he realizes that the female could become more malignant than her mate and delight, for its own sake in murder and wretchedness (Shelley 202). Also if the male and female monster have children they would be able to destroy the human race. The monster then threatens Victor and everyone he loves. I shall be with you on your wedding-night (Shelley, 206).
  • The monster starts to wreak havoc and kills Henry Clerval, Victor's best friend. He blames the murder on Victor. The monster wants Victor to feel the loneliness he felt his entire life.
  • Victor is devastated by Henry's murder. Have my murderous machinations deprived you also, my dearest Henry, of life? Two I have already destroyed, other victims await their destiny (Shelley 217). Victor ends up going to court for the murder of Clerval, but is found innocent.
  • Elizabeth is worried about her relationship with Victor and questions whether Victor is in love with another women. Victor writes to Elizabeth and promises to tell her his secret It will chill your frame with horror, and then, far from being surprised at my misery, you will only wonder that I survive what I have endured (Shelley 233)..
  • Victor and Elizabeth secretly get married but the monster seems to know where Victor is at all times. Does Victor confess to Elizabeth about creating the monster and being ultimately responsible for everyones' deaths? Will the monster follow through on his promise to be with Victor on his wedding night? Who will live forever alone?
