  • Zzzz
  • weathering
  • today we are talking about weathering. mechanical and chemical
  • first we will learn mechanical weathering
  • rebound = Material (water or rock) is removed from a massive rock and with the release of pressure, the rock rises, and then cracks.
  • Animal activity = As animals burrow they cause rocks to break and sediment to be created by letting in water and other agents of weathering.
  • ice wedging = Freezing water expands and causes cracks in rocks to become larger; the water melts and the process repeats itself.
  • Plant growth = Growing roots enlarge (make bigger) cracks in rocks.
  • Abrasion = Sediment and rocks carried by agents of erosion (wind, water, ice) sand down, grind, scratch other surfaces.
  • Extreme temperatures = Rocks heated on the surface (by sun, wildfires) are a different temperature than the inside of the rock, causing stress on the rock which leads it to crack and exfoliate (shed)
  • Jake wake up weathering is VERY important
  • Now that is the 6 agents of mechanical weathering. Now there are still 5 agents of chemical weathering.
  • dude?
  • now some of the things on this list you already know alot about but we still have to teach it. maybe you will see it in a new way
  • Water = Dissolves the minerals in rock.
  • Living organisms (root tips) = Their roots give off a weak acid that dissolves rock
  • Carbon dioxide = Carbon dioxide + water = carbonic acid
  • Acid rain = Burning coal, oil, or gas + water vapor in clouds = acid rain
  • Oxygen = Oxygen + iron = rust (iron oxide)
  • Now I hope that you liked learning about it. Tomorrow we will learn about the water cycle and don't worry it will be a MUCH longer lesson.
