- The main character is persuaded by the king of Salem, Melchizedek, to abandon his life as a shepherd and pursue his personal legend by taking the dangerous route to the pyramids to find treasure.

- After meeting Fatima, the crystal merchant, the Alchemist, learning the language of the world, and selling his beloved sheep, the boy sets off again in search of his treasure.
- Resolution
- The main character finally makes it to the pyramids and starts digging for treasure. He then faces a near death experience after an encounter with thieves.
- One of the thieves stops attacking the boy and tells him that he used to have dreams of finding treasure near a run down church under a large tree. The thief continues the story, telling the boy that he might as well give up on finding any treasure.
- What ? yes they are.
- The boy sees the thieves as another omen, and goes to the place that he thief talked about in his dream. Then, Santiago finally finds his treasure. He can now go back to Fatima and live happily knowing that he did not ignore his personal legend.
