The Spartans were bitterly defeated, losing all 301 people. At the same time, the Athenian general, Themistocles, ordered the evacuation of all the women and children in Athens, while the men went to their warships. After their victory over the Spartans, the Persians headed to Athens; but they found it abandoned, so they burned the city.
