  • Louisiana Purchase
  • France sold a large area of land to America that was later known as the Louisiana Purchase. The land spanned from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. The size of the United States doubled, and along with the land came many useful recourses. Also, the land was only fifteen million dollars, which means the American's paid about three cents per acre! The treaty that let America buy the land was signed on on April 30, 1803. (Thomas Jefferson was president of the United States at this time, and Napoleon Bonaparte was in charge of the French.

  • Texas - The Battle of the Alamo
  • The Battle of the Alamo was a fight between the Mexicans and Texans. It took place at the Alamo in San Antonio, that was blocking Mexico to get into Texas. The battle happened on February 23, 1836.

  • The Louisiana Purchase was significant to the United States because it included many resources including the Mississippi River, and the New Orleans port, which are two large trading routes and would give America a lot more power, representation, and wealth. But, the indigenous peoples, including the five civilized tribes: Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole, were already living there, and they did not want to move for the Americans because according tothe Natives, the land was not France's to sell and neither was it the Americans' to buy.

  • The Trail of Tears is a significant event for Americans because the removal of the five civilized tribes cleared many acres of fertile land and helped American expansion by creating tension which led to the Civil War. This tension between the Indigenous peoples was created because the Americans were forcing the Indigenous peoples out of their homeland, and the Americans were cruel, pushing them out of their own homeland when all they wanted was to be left alone, willing to share the land with the Americans.

  • The idea of Indian removal was created by president Andrew Jackson, who convinced congress to have the five civilized tribes (Cherokee, Chikasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole) re-located west, to present day Oklahoma, in 1831. The leader of the Cherokees was John Ross. and the president of the United States was Martin Van Buren when the Trail of Tears happened.

  • The Battle of the Alamo was a significant event because the Texans were fighting for their own independence, and the battle distracted the Mexican army and led Texas to capture Santa Anna and get independence. The Mexicans believed the Texans had betrayed their promises to follow the Mexican laws, and when they did not follow Mexican law, they had to fight Texas to keep it part of Mexico and make them follow Mexican law. 
  • American Indians and "Westward Expansion" - The Ghost Dance and The Wounded Knee Massacre
  • The Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago ended the Mexican American war and recognized that Texas was part of America, which was significant to the United States because it seemed to prove the idea of Manifest Destiny, the idea that God wanted the United States to expand. This also caused more tension in the United States because people who wanted to get rid of slaves thought the land expansion would cause more slavery in America.
  • The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was an agreement made between the U.S. and Mexico that ended the war between Mexico and the U.S., set Texas's border at Rio Grande. The Texans also promised to keep the Mexicans in America safe. The signing of the treaty took place at Guadalupe Hidalgo, and was signed on February 2, 1848.

  • Oregon Territory was the result of the Oregon Treaty which gave the United States a lot of land from Britain, reinforced the idea of Manifest Destiny, and gave the United States more wealth, power, and population, which meant America would get more representation. This would also lead to conflicts with the Indigenous peoples, because they were the Natives of the land and already lived in the area.
  • President Polk compromised with Britain reset the border of the U.S. and Canada. A treaty was signed, and the land that America got from Canada was called Oregon Territory.The treaty was signed on June 15, 1846, and the land the U.S. got from Canada was then called Oregon Country.

  •  The Lakota were performing a Ghost Dance ceremony, which was an important religious ceremony hoping for the buffalo to come back and believed their dreams would become reality, which stopped them from quitting, and gave them hope. At Wounded Knee, Americans killed many Lakota Indians, which was seen as an honorable achievement by the United States, because the Americans saw this ceremony as a threat to them, and believed this could be a sign that the Indigenous peoples would over-power them.
  • \On December 29, 1890, the Lakota tribe (one of the subcultures of the Sioux people) was performing the Ghost dance at Wounded Knee Creek. The U.S. Cavalry opened fire, and killed many Lakota Indians.
