  • Last but not least, we have Cognitivism. A Cognitivist concerns himself with the internal processes that are a response to the external world such as language, memory, learning and problem solving (Eysneck, 2005) .This is Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist who wanted to understand how children learn new information. He believe that a child's brain develops in four stages and out forth four stages:1. Sensorimotor stage: birth to 2 years old2. Preoperational stage: 2-7 years old3. Concrete Operational stage: 7-11 years old4. Formal Operational stage: 12- adulthood. (Piaget,2000)
  • This six-month-oldwill explore his world and make knowledge through his senses and movement
  • Research has discovered that children may skip stages or even regress into earlier stages (Lee,2022). What would that mean in terms of professional learning, Bianca?
  • This five -year-old girl will experience language development and symbolic play
  • This ten-year old boy will experience logical thought
  • This sixteen-year-old girl will develop higher order critical thought and deductive reasoning
  • I think Piaget's Cognitive Development Model would be very helpful. I feel like it would be wise to attend professional development on childhood trauma and child abuse, as it is common for children who live with parents who struggle with mental health or substance- related issues to experience learning and behaviour difficulties (Odhayani, 2013) which could lend itself to the child regressing into some stages or even skipping some stages entirely.
  • Very good, Bianca! Please take the bits from each theory that you liked the best and use it to make your own, unique teaching philosophy! I cannot wait to see what you do.
