  • In 1712, British inventor Thomas Newcomen usedcoal to power a steam engine. Later, in the 1760s, Scottish engineer James Watt created a steam engine that could be used in a varietyof industries. Watts steam engine drove the Industrial Revolution. It was used in factories and mines. Eventually, the steam engine powered steamships and locomotives, or trains. After the 1820s, the steam engine allowed people to travel much greater distances in less time.They could also transport goods farther and more quickly.
