- The Siddhartha was born with strange marks on his body. A forchen teller said he was either going to be a great emperor of a spiritual leader. The king kept his son inside the palace to prevent Siddhartha from becoming interested in the life of a spiritual leader and the world outside the palace.
- When Siddhartha got to go outside at the age of nine he saw other people working tirelessly. With that he thought about why people have to suffer and he slipped into his first enlightened state.
- When Siddhartha was in the town he saw an old man struggling. He asked his dad what was wrong with him and his dad said he is growing old. Siddhartha felt bad for the old man and wondered why he had to suffer.
- Siddhartha then saw a man laying on the ground. He asked his dad if anyone could become sick. His dad said yes, the man is suffering from disease. Siddhartha was shocked to know the truth that anyone could become sick and it will lead to suffering.
- The young prince then saw a corpse of a dead animal. It was a Brahman belief that when you die you will return to earth to suffer time and time again. Siddhartha thought again, why is there so much suffering.
- The last sign was man with a begging bowl. Siddhartha thought why would anyone want to give up the pleasures of the world to wander the countryside begging. The man, in order to confront reality seeked answers for the pain of the world. Siddhartha's mind was churning with his new understanding of the world.
