  • Montag takes the book home and takes others out of a secret stash he has in his house. He claims to the fire chief Captain Beatty that he is sick and cannot come to work. He uses this as an excuse to read the books he has to decide if they are not worth burning. Beatty figures out he is reading the books and comes to his house, assuring him this will wear out and he will lose interest in the books and go back to burning them.
  • Montag continues to read the books he has obtained. He turns to Faber, an old professor and friend, to plan out a way to take the Firemen down, and gives him a means of communication across long distances with a device in his ear so he can always talk to Faber. When he reads a poem to some friends of Mildred, his wife, they report him for having books in his house. Beattyconsults Montag the next day indirectly about it, and then takes Montag to his own house to burn it down, because it had books in it. Montag proceeds to burn his own house down, but when Beatty least expects it he kills him, making him a fugitive of the state.
  • Now, everybody is after Montag, including helicopters and a robotic hound that can temporarily freezeparts of people's limbs. He takes refuge in Faber's house and devises a new plan to meet with him far away from the city out in the wilderness. He then runs out of Faber's house, jumps in a river, and is swept away. He eventually comes across railroad tracks, and Faber mentioned that fugitives that are running away from the law are relativelysafe on the unused tracks. He finds a group of fugitives that value knowledgeand were in the past professors and holders of literary knowledge, as they are now, but in a different way. They actually memorize books just in case if they are destroyed forever so that later after the war they can all unite, hundreds of bookkeepers, and re-establish knowledge in literature. He joins this organization and also the city Montag lived in was destroyed by fighter jets from the opposing side of the war.
