  • Atoms are typically considered to be the smallest building blocks of life, but this is not true, as the smallest are the protons, neutrons, and electrons that make up the atom itself.
  • Lets take a look together...

  • Protons, and neutrons are located in the center (or nucleus) of the atom. While the electrons are "orbiting" the outside. Different types of elements have different numbers of protons and electrons, the more they have the higher up you go on the periodic table of elements!
  • Electrons
  • Yes, yes, very interesting...
  • The next thing we are going to learn is compounds. Compounds are 2 or more chemicals that reacted chemically and made a new substance. Some examples are water, salt, and baking soda, which are the ones we will be discussing today.
  • Water (H2O) is made up of two elements, two parts oxygen, and two parts hydrogen. Salt (NaCI) is made up of two elements as well, one part sodium, and one part chlorine. The last, but not least, is baking soda. Baking soda is made up of FOUR elements. One part sodium, one part hydrogen, one part carbon, and three parts oxygen.
  • Time for some interesting facts! Did you know if you mix baking soda and water, you have your very own home-made deodorant?
  • AND, if you brush your teeth with the same mixture, (maybe a little more water) you get a teeth whitener? (depending on your teeth type/health) Cool huh?
  • Lastly, we will be talking about elements. An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down. Each element has its own atomic number, which can be determined by the number of protons and/or the number of electrons.
  • The three elements we will be researching today are carbon, neon, and boron. Keep in mind, that no two elements are the same, they may be similar, but NEVER the same.

  • Carbon's atomic number is 6, and its mass is 12.011. Its physical appearance is gray or black, that you can scratch with your fingernail.
  • Neon's atomic number is 10, and its mass is 20.1797. Its physical appearance is odorless, a gas, and colorless.
  • The last element we will talk about is boron. Boron's atomic number is 5, and its mass is 10.81. Its physical appearance is a powder or solid, and usually black in color and brittle.
