  • This study was created in a lab setting at Columbia University in 1969. It was inspired by the case of Kitty Genovese. This experiment was a field experiment in NYC subway from 11am-3pm on weekdays. The aim of the study was to study bystander behavior in a natural setting.
  • Sample: -estimated about 4,450 people-45% black and 55% white-average number in car was 43-average number in critical area was 8.5-opportunity sample
  • Victims. Models. and Observers:-2 male and 2 female college students boarded the train (conducted the study in groups of 4)-all females sat in area adjacent from critical area and were the observers-males were either the model or victim-Victim: aged 26-35, wore same clothes, black (1) or white (3), drunk or cane-Model: all helpers were white, aged 24-29
  • Procedure: -70 seconds into ride the victim staggered and collapsed on the floor-victim remained on floor until helped or model helped-model helped either 70 seconds (early trial) or 150 seconds (late trial)-observers recorded who helped, who moved, comments made etc-procedure done 6-8 times a day
  • Data Collection: -qualitative: comments made by passengers-quantitative: number of helpers, time they helped, race, gender, location, moving
  • Results:-no diffusion responsibility found -someone who appears drunk is LESS likely to receive help than someone ill -men more likely to help -drunk less helped due to higher chance of embarrassment, disgust, harm -women less likely due to strength or roles -cost-benefit model discovered
