  • "He took his time between lashes. Only the first one really hurt" (Wiesel 57). When Elie got caught doing something he had to take 25 whips or lashes. Elie couldn't do anything about the other person hurting him he just had to hit there and take the pain.
  • Man vs. Nature
  • "The idea of dying, of ceasing to be, began to fasciate me.....to no longer feel the excruciating pain of my foot."(Wiesel 86). Elie is questioning if he should go on to live or not. He is trying to fight his thoughts of wanting to die because of the conditions that he is in.
  • Man vs. Society
  • "Blessed be gods name? Why, but why would I bless him" (Wiesel 67). Elie's religious beliefs are really changing at this point in the book. He is questioning whether he believes if there is a god or not because of everything that is happening around him.
  • The end
  • "An icy wind was blowing violently. But we marched without faltering" (Wiesel 85). In the march that they have to make it takes place in the winter time. So the conditions are cold, snowy, and windy.
  • "The search lights came on. Hundreds of SS appeared out of the darkness, accompanied by police dogs" (Wiesel 84). The whole situation in this book is Man vs. Society. The main reason is because Hitler convinced a lot of people the jews were bad.
