  • What does the character think about?
  • When Jude saw Reese all bruised up she said this '"You should take that thing off... If it hurts you. You don't have to wear it here. I don't care what you look like.' She thought he might be relieved, but instead, a dark and unfamiliar look passed across his face" (Bennett 118). Jude said this thinking that Reese would feel appreciated and loved but Reese was still not comfortable with other people seeing him, so when Jude said that, it was almost disrespectful. She was thinking about what she wanted and now what Reese wanted.
  • How does the character look?
  • When talking about Jude's journey to Los Angeles Bennett writes, "He would'nt have been surprised at all to learn that she was a runner--that lean, boyish body, those long legs...Too bad, thos legs with that face. That skin. Jesus he'd never seen a woman that black before"(Bennett 81). This is how a man on the bus described Jude. She was used to this, she didn't even notice his stares.
  • When talking to Reese about his transition Jude thought about this, "She'd tried to lighten her skin once, during her first summer in Mallard. She was still young enough to believe that such a thing was possible, yet old enough to understand that it would require a degree of alchemy that she didn't quite understand" (Bennett 105). Jude understands thatshe can not lighten her skin as much as she wishes she could she never will be able to.
  • What is something the character can not do?
