  • "The memory be green"
  • "...our dear brother's death, the memory be green, and that it us befitted to bear our hearts in grief, and our whole kingdom to be contracted in one brow of woe..."
  • "They are actions that a man must play"
  • "For they are actions that a man might play. But I have that within which passes show."
  • "I am thy fathers spirit"
  • King Hamlet of Denmark has died very recently, only two months in the grave, and his brother and wife are now married and ruling Denmark in his place. This causes Hamlet pain and a very depressed mental state.
  • "Sleeping within my orchard"
  • "...Sleeping within mine orchard...thy uncle stole with juice of cursèd hebenon in a vial, and in the porches of mine ears did pour..."
  • King Claudius gives a big speech to the court. He and Gertrude are no longer seemingly mourning the late King's death. Claudius's speech and actions appear fake to Hamlet as if he and the Queen are unbothered by the King's death. Hamlet becomes suspicious that Claudius had something to do with his father's death.
  • "Like the murder of my father"
  • The ghost of King Hamlet tells young Hamlet that while he was sleeping in his orchard, Claudius poured poison in his ear which caused him to die. The ghost wants Hamlet to take revenge, but Hamlet doesn't know if the ghost is an evil spirit tempting him or not.
  • "Am I a coward?"
  • "Revengehisfoulandmostunnaturalmurder."
  • "What would he doHad he the motive and the cue for passionThat I have? He would drown the stage with tears..."
  • After thinking about the ghost's story, Hamlet does not know if he can trust it because when the ghost was supposedly poisoned, he was sleeping. So no one would have actually be there to witness Claudius killing the King.
  • Hamlet does not know if Claudius is actually guilty of killing his father and he doesn't want to kill an innocent man, so he makes a plan to test if Claudius is guilty. Hamlet adds a few lines to a play to resemble his father's death and see how Claudius reacts to it.
  • "You could, for a need, study a speech of some dozen or sixteen lines which Iwould set down and insert in't, could you not?"
  • Hamlet is very indecisive and can't make quick decisions which cause him to be more cowardly. Because of this, Hamlet gets upset with himself because he cannot create as many emotions as the actor can. He is very hard on himself in this scene.
