- Prometheus was the clever titan. He created all the living creatures from a mixture of earth and water.
- Epimetheus, his brother, wanted to help Prometheus out. So, Prometheus let him distribute all the qualities to each animal that they needed to survive.
- So, Epimetheus assigned all the animals different qualities. He gave them all different sizes and protected them from all hazards of the world.
- One day, Epimetheus came upon a man. The man had no gifts or specials skills that were given to him.
- Prometheus saw how his brother was upset by this and he too also loved man. So he decided to go see Hephaestus and Athena, in Olympus, for help.
- Although they were both afraid of what Zeus will do to them, they both tought arts and crafts to Prometheus so he can go teach mankind.
- Prometheus then returned to earth and taught mankind. Once he taught mankind and they became aware of gods and worshipped them.
- Then Prometheus became concerned that mortals would give the gods best fruits of their labors and leave nothing for them.
- So, Prometheus planned a scheme where he would carefully carve the carcass of a great Ox and separate them into two different piles and have the mortals offer that than their fruits to the gods. Prometheus had wrapped one pile with white fat and covered the second in Oxide. He then called upon Zeus and asked him to pick a pile for him and one for the mortals.
- When Zeus lifted up the fatty portion, he was very pleased impressed with the sacrifice. When he saw the second offering he was repulsed by it and said that man would get the stomach and the mortal gods would get the fatty part.
- Once he made the announcement Prometheus could not hide his joy that his plan worked. However, Zeus was hungry so he unwrapped the fatty part but he saw bones! He then became full of rage.
- Zeus full of rage says that he forbids man the use of fire. Prometheus knew that man could survive without fire. So he decides to steal it from the gods.
- However Zeus saw him stealing the fire and decided to punish him and mankind.
- Zeus had Hephaestus take Prometheus to an ice cliff and chain him there. Prometheus told Hephaestus that one day someone will betray Zeus. And when asked to reveal the name he refused to.
- So Zeus launched lighting bolts at him and horrible storms.
