  • I am your king now and I shall not work with parliament as I believe in the Divine Right of Kings!!
  • Here Lies James I
  • I will continue my fathers work and choose not to listen to the parliament! My power will not be limited!!
  • I have created a new army and we WILL win this Civil War!!!
  • After Queen Elizabeth I dies in 1603, James I is made king and believes in the Divine Right of Kings meaning he believes he does not have to work with parliament. He also does not see eye to eye on issues of money. This lead to the beginning of issues between monarchy and parliament.
  • I will not take after my father and grandfather before me. I will not believe int the Divine Right of Kings!
  • James I son, Charles I, becomes king and continues where his father left off. He believes in the Divine Right of Kings. When parliament tries to limit his power using the Petition of Power, Charles I signs it but then later chose to ignore it upsetting the Puritans.
  • The war starts and the Round heads (Parliament) go against the Cavaliers (supporters of the King) and win. The new model army is then lead by Oliver Cromwell and the Kings supporters are purged from parliament. Charles I is killed, the English monarchy is abolished, and Oliver sets up military dictatorship. Oliver's leadership does not last long before he dies and Charles I son, Charles II is put on the thrown
  • My wife and I have accepted the role of ruling the thrown!
  • Charles II is made King and chooses to not follow in the footsteps of those before him. He does not take part in the Divine Right of Kings and does not threaten Parliaments authority. He creates a new religion, Anglicanism, which treats puritans and Catholics the same.
  • When Charles II dies with no heir, his brother James II is put on the thrown. Parliament becomes worried by the new ruler. English nobles then encourage the ruler of the Netherlands, William of Orange, to invade and take over. William is married to Mary who is James II daughter. When James II realized he had little support from England he fled to France.
  • After James II fled to France the Revolution is won with little bloodshed and William of Orange and Mary accept to rule the thrown. The English Bill of Rights lays the foundation for the constitutional monarchy. Monarchy and Parliament then join together and destroy the Divine Right of Kings.
