The paw! The monkey's paw!
The fire crackled quietly in the night. Mr. and Mrs. White were playing chess by the bright blazing fireplace when their son, Herbert came to sit with them. Herbert showed them the mummified monkey's paw that can grant three wishes. Both Mr. and Mrs. White were unsure of it.
No! Do not open the door!
The family tried making a wish to see if it is true. Mr. White wished for two hundred pounds. With no money to be found the next day, Herbert went off to work. At dusk, the owls hooting, the frogs croaking and the foul stench of rotting garbage reminded them of death. Suddenly, the phone rang and they were told that Herbert has died, and they got two hundred pounds as compensation.
My son, Herbert does not return.
Mrs. White could not sleep. So, she got out of bed, pacing back and forth through the delicate slips of moonlight twinkling in her bedroom window glass. As she wiped the sweat from her brow, she realised they could just wish for their son back. With much regret, Mrs. White made the wish.
Soon after that, they heard 'knock, knock, knock!' on their door. Mrs. White's eyes lit up and she bolted for the door. A gust of cold air blew over him, causing his body to shiver as Mr. White descended the stairs after Mrs. White to stop her. In a quick thinking, Mr. White decided to find the monkey's paw and wished Herbert back to the grave.
That must be Herbert!
Mrs. White opened the door to find no one outside. She then rushes outside to look for Herbert. The pitter-patter of rain and whispering breeze then progressed into a gushing downpour and howling wind. Mrs. White kneeled in the rain and cried. Mr. White came out to comfort her and brought her inside.
