The missionaries are overjoyed with the offer,much to the surprise of the elders. The elders, on the other hand, areconfident that the forest's evil spirits and powers would assassinate themissionaries within days.

  • The elders discover that the guy who boasted of slaying the snake has died of sickness after declaring the new ostracism policy. The peasants' faith in their gods is thus restored, and the converts are no longer shunned.
