- I don't want to work at the A&P !! I want to make a career out of baseball.
- You think I didn't have hopes and dreams? But I put that aside to commit to our relationship and this is what I get as a thank you?

- In this scene we see Troy ranting to Bono about their positions at work. Troy wants to be a truck driver, not a garbage collector. This relates to the theme of barriers because colored people weren't given much of an opportunity back then and with Troy being black it makes it difficult for him to achieve that position.
- We see Troy is upset about cory ditching his job at the A&P to play football. Troy wants Cory to give up on football. This relates to the theme of barriers because Troy is the reason Cory can't pursue his baseball career, he believes Cory can't make a career out of it.
- Rose is furious with Toy for cheating on and to add to that 18 years of her life and marriage have gone to waste, she could have achieved her hopes and dreams but she decided to fully commit to her relationship/marriage with Troy. This is related to the theme of barriers because Rose's commitment to her marriage prevented her from her pursuing her hopes and dreams.
